2 Hurst Officers Placed on Leave After Arrest

Two Hurst officers have been placed on administrative leave while the Hurst Police Department investigates the arrest of one of the officers on suspicion of drunken driving.

A police report said off-duty Hurst officer Steven Jay Barriger, 27, was pulled over shortly after 1:30 a.m. Friday by a Fort Worth DWI officer during a holiday weekend crackdown.

Police said Barriger and fellow officer Jacob Eubanks had been out celebrating Eubanks' upcoming promotion to corporal, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The Fort Worth officer said Barriger swerved and almost hit a vehicle at a red light, the newspaper reported.

Fort Worth police obtained a search warrant for a blood test after Barriger refused a breath test, according to the newspaper.

Barriger was detained at the Mansfield Jail while Eubanks was released at the scene to Hurst police officials.

Barriger was released Friday after posting his $500 bond.

Hurst Assistant Police Chief Steve Niekamp said both officers have been placed on administrative leave. He told the Star-Telegram Barriger had been a Hurst officer since May 2008. Eubanks has worked for the department since August 2001, according to the newspaper.

Calls by The Associated Press Saturday to Barriger and Eubanks were not immediately successful.
