A spokeswoman for the Democrat said yesterday that he is engaged to Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The spokeswoman said the 44-year-old Weiner proposed to Abedin on May 23. No wedding date has been set and there's no word on how a ceremony for Abedin, a Muslim, and Weiner, who is Jewish, would work.
"I think it's wonderful," the pol's mother, Fran, told the Daily News. "She's lovely. What more can I say?"
Weiner ran for New York City mayor in 2005 and planned to run again this year. But he backed away from the race in May, after billionaire incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg persuaded the City Council to change the city's term limits so he could seek a third term. At the time, Weiner said he pulled out because he'd "like to build a family."
An intern in the office of the First Lady in 1996, Abedin, who was born in Michigan but raised in Saudi Arabia, became an indispensable aide to Clinton, globe-trotting with the Senator as her traveling chief of staff and was regarded as her "right-hand woman" and "body woman" last year on the presidential campaign trail.
In a 2007 profile of Abedin in theNew York Observer, Weiner offered a bit of a clue of his feelings for her, gushing about her ability to perform under pressure.
“This notion that Senator Clinton is a cool customer -- I mean, I don’t dispute it, but the coolest customer in that whole operation is Huma,” Weiner said
