Profar Needs Shoulder Surgery

Here we go again, folks.

Last year by now we'd learned Derek Holland needed knee surgery — a surgery that forced him to miss the first five months of the six-month MLB season. Of course, several injuries followed that one and led to a historic rash of injuries for the Rangers, who went on to lose nearly 100 games.

One of those injuries was Jurickson Profar, who had a torn shoulder muscle that he and the club chose to let heal on its own without surgery. He ended up missing the entire 2014 season — his age 21 season — and missed out on a key year in his development as one of baseball's top prospects.

Profar had been getting good results after his rest and rehab, and he'd been throwing at 105 feet with no discomfort, and after his latest MRI, it's now being reported by several outlets that Profar in fact does need shoulder surgery. He'll have the surgery on Monday in DFW and no timetable has been released for his return, though The Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant is saying he'll likely miss the entire 2015 season.

Ugh.

Reports also say doctors suggested Profar have surgery back in September, which probably would've meant he wouldn't be ready for the start of this season. But now, he's probably in line to miss his second straight full season of baseball in the key developmental stage and he's been lapped in the minds of Rangers brass by 21-year-old Rougned Odor.

Remember just two years ago when Profar was the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball? Now, he's starting to look more and more like a guy who might never realize that potential. Remember when the Rangers said Profar was untouchable and couldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Giancarlo Stanton in trade talks? Well, that happened, and now Stanton is a perennial MVP candidate with prodigious power.
