Marte Flying Under the Radar in Frisco

It’s just another example of how stacked the Rangers farm system really is.

Believe it or not, the Rangers have another middle infielder in the minors that has been impressive over the last couple of weeks. Shortstop Luis Marte is quietly making a name for himself in Double-A Frisco.

Marte came through in the clutch Saturday night, breaking a 6-6 tie with a solo home run in the 14th inning for the Roughriders. However, Frisco gave up two runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-7 loss to Corpus Christi. Despite that loss, the 22-year old still shined, going 4-for-7, adding a double to go along with that homer. He finished the game with a season-high four hits.

During his current five-game hitting streak, Marte is 12-for-22 with eight RBI, raising his batting average to .279 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 33 games with Frisco. He played in three games in the Arizona Rookie League, hitting .417 in 12 at-bats.

Marte isn’t just in a groove at the plate, but also slick in the field. He’s committed just three errors in 70 attempts with Frisco. That’s good enough for a .984 fielding percentage.

The 6-foot-1, 188-pound right-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic has been in the Rangers system since he was a teenager, signing as an international free agent during the winter of 2010. Marte played mostly in Class-A or rookie ball before making his first trip to Frisco last season. Having bounced around in different levels over the last couple of seasons, it seems like everything is finally clicking for Marte.

The road to Arlington isn’t an easy one of a middle infielder, especially at short with Elvis Andrus and Jurickson Profar already on the big league roster. But if Marte continues to develop and improve at Frisco, he can possibly move up the ladder and somehow throw his name into the mix in the future.
