VP: Cowboys Almost Traded Back Into the 3rd Round

Dallas was reportedly close to trading back into the third round to land an offensive lineman

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones says the team was very close to trading up and into the third round on Day Two the 2014 Draft on Saturday. Dallas gave up their third round pick to the Redskins when they moved up to select defensive end Demarcus Lawrence in the second round, but attempted to trade back into the round when “another offensive lineman” caught their eye.

We got the rug pulled out from under us about two picks away from it there yesterday in the bottom of the third,” Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News. “We had a neat little deal set up. It was going to be a nice pick for us too, that I think would have worked out.”

So who was this mystery target?

Jon Machota of the Morning News points out that of the linemen taken in the latter half of the third round, LSU guard Trai Turner was the only one to visit Valley Ranch leading up to the draft.

“It’s probably not fair to share,” Jones added, “but it was something that was real close.”
