Oh-and-2 Would Be Premature Death Sentence For Cowboys

I’ve said repeatedly that the Cowboys won’t make the playoffs this season.

And if they don’t beat the Titans on Sunday I’ll be right. Yes, already.

Since 1990 only 12 percent of teams that started the season 0-2 rallied to make the playoffs. I know, one of those was the ’93 Cowboys. But, in case you haven’t noticed, that team was a smidge different than this year’s version.

In ’93 the Cowboys were defending Super Bowl champions, but were hamstrung by running back Emmitt Smith’s contract holdout. He missed the first two games of the season, losses at Washington and then to Buffalo at Texas Stadium. After going 0-2, defensive end Charles Haley slammed his helmet into a locker-room wall and yelled for owner Jerry Jones to end Emmitt’s hiatus.

Smith was signed the next week, the Cowboys won 12 of their final 14 and rolled to another Super Bowl.

I’m certain neither the NFL’s all-time rusher or a Ring of Honor pass rusher is arriving to help the 2014 Cowboys. And I’m just as sure that a loss to the Titans will end this season before it really has a chance to begin.

Back in 2011 the Cowboys lost their opener to the Jets and trailed the 49ers late in Week 2. Tony Romo, despite a cracked rib and punctured lung, returned to the game and led a late rally. The quarterback has said repeatedly that he took the risk of returning because – staring at 0-2 – he felt as though his team’s season was already on the line.

In Las Vegas, the Cowboys’ odds of winning Super Bowl XLIX have already plummeted to 66/1. Lose to Tennessee and their chances of simply making the playoffs will equally unrealistic.
