NFC East Watch: ‘Skins Get New Defensive Coordinator

The Redskins hired Joe Barry to take over the defense on Tuesday

The Washington Redskins’ search for a new defensive coordinator came to an end on Tuesday with the hiring of former San Diego Chargers linebackers coach, Joe Barry.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported the hiring on Tuesday afternoon and the team announced the move via Twitter later in the day.

The Redskins had seemed set to bring in former 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio for the position, interviewing him officially on Sunday, but Fangio opted for the Chicago Bears.

Barry coached the Chargers linebackers from 2011 through last season, and has had two stints as linebackers coach with the Buccaneers. His only experience as a defensive coordinator came in 2007-2008, with the then-miserable Detroit Lions.

Which brings us to the Cowboys connection. With the Lions, Barry worked under his father-in-law and current Cowboys defensive coordinator, Rod Marinelli.
