Herring Not Joining Cowboys After All: Report

Will Herring reportedly agreed to terms with Dallas on Thursday

Remember when the Dallas Cowboys agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former Saints linebacker and special teams ace Will Herring on Thursday?

Well, that’s not happening now.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas, the two sides agreed to back out of the deal, putting Herring back on the free agent market. He would have been the Cowboys’ third free agent signing of this new league year; they signed defensive linemen Jeremy Mincey and Terrell McClain on Wednesday.

Herring was never a starter as a linebacker with the Saints, but he made his impact felt on special teams and was actually named captain of that unit in 2013. In New Orleans’ victory over Dallas last year, he had five tackles--three on defense and two on special teams.

There’s no word on what cause the sudden about-face, but a source in contact with Archer said it was not due to a failed physical.
