Cowboys on “Short List” for HBO's “Hard Knocks”

A report on Monday by ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas, which fell into our waiting lap via BloggingTheBoys.com, says that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the frontrunner for next season’s edition of the HBO series “Hard Knocks.” Another report, however, says that the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and yes, your Dallas Cowboys, were also being considered.

The Cowboys, of course, are reality television veterans. Aside from spawning the unwatchable “T.O. Show” on VH1 with their decision to cut Terrell Owens in the offseason of 2008, Miles Austin kept up with a certain Kardashian for a time last year.

The team has twice been featured on “Hard Knocks,” and have made for good television. But as we’ve seen, making for good television doesn’t necessarily make for good football teams. In 2002, the first time the team appeared on the show, Dallas finished 5-11; in 2008, the team’s second appearance, they finished 9-7--but unthinkably missed the playoffs in a season that many believed the team to be a legit candidate for the Super Bowl.

So Cowboys fan, if HBO came calling, would you want to see the Cowboys featured on “Hard Knocks”?

Either way, it won’t much matter if the owners and players’ union are unable to come to an agreement by August, which looks increasingly likely. Then again, this too could make for a dynamite HBO series: “Hard Knocks: Federal Court Addition.”
