Sprinkles Goes Vegan

We consider a "cupcakeatarian" diet

Veg-heads rejoice!

Starting this coming Monday, January 25th, Sprinkles locations nationwide will be offering a brand-new hand-held treat for those who stick to a strictly plant-based diet.

While vegetarians may partake of eggs, milk, cheese and the like, vegans eschew all animal-based ingredients…which makes ooey-gooey cream cheese frosting and buttery cake big no-no’s, as a rule.  Beyond cardboard-like cookies, there are but a handful of places here in town where a vegan can score truly satisfying baked goods.  Spiral Diner and Crooked Tree Coffeehouse are two local favorites, and now there’s one more delicious entry to add to the short list.

After sampling Sprinkles’ Vegan Red Velvet cupcake yesterday (thanks, Sprinkles!), we’d happily place it in the category of veggie-based desserts that would tempt even the most carnivorous diner.  Featuring all-natural soymilk, tofu-based cream cheese and coconut oil, the treats boast moist, chocolately crimson cake and silken frosting that tastes much naughtier than its virtuous ingredients would suggest.

In addition to Vegan Red Velvet, Sprinkles will also offer Gluten-Free Red Velvet Cupcakes come Monday.  Both flavors are $3.25 each or $36 per dozen.

We’re hardly up for taking the vegan plunge, but thanks to Sprinkles, we’re now considering a “cupcakeatarian” diet.
