Austin Cops May Sport Cameras on Heads

Some Austin police officers will wear small cameras as headgear for another way to record evidence.

Chief Art Acevedo says the cameras, which could be in use by early March, will be worn by officers on foot and bicycle patrols. The camera would be on an officer's head or ear.

Austin joins about a dozen police departments nationwide testing cameras for several months.

Cmdr. Troy Gay says say he thinks the cameras will provide a better visual depiction of what happens. Officers would not have access to the video once it was downloaded.

The Austin American-Statesman reported late Sunday that some headgear cameras could come from Taser International Inc.

The Austin City Council in August approved $15.5 million for new dashboard cameras in patrol cars and other digital equipment.
