There are currently five head coaching vacancies in the NFL, and there’s a good chance that more are coming (Jim Caldwell, we’re looking at you). Meanwhile, the Texans are preparing for a playoff game--their first in team history--due in large part to the work of Wade Phillips, who, after three and a half seasons as Cowboys’ head coach, headed to Houston to serve as defensive coordinator this year.
Phillips has thrived in the role. The Texans rank in the top five in every major defensive coordinator, and the defense was crucial in the playoff berth, helping the team traverse injuries to both Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart.
So would Wade Phillips return to a head coaching role for the first time since being fired by the Cowboys midway through the 2010 season? In an interview with NFL.com this week, Phillips said, he believes, he should at least be considered.
“I don't like to toot my own horn,” Phillips said, via the Dallas Morning News. “I've got a good record. I think I should be considered. I guess people may have taken it the wrong way that I ought to be a head coach. I don't believe that. I think I should be considered. If you look at my record, and you can look at all the people they're talking about now, and my record is better than most everyone they're talking about, as a head coach.”
