Texas Sends Seven Teams To The CWS

The Lone Star State will be represented by seven teams in the 2009 College World Series

On Friday, the NCAA College World Series will kick off, with 64 teams facing off in regional play.

Of those 64, seven teams will represent the Lone Star State.

Aside from the University of Texas, who won the Big XII Conference championship and the top seed in the tournament, Rice, Baylor, Texas A&M, Texas State, TCU and Sam Houston State will be in the mix when the regionals kick off later this week.

TCU, Texas and Rice will be among 16 national host sites.

Rice will play Sam Houston State in the opening game of the Houston regional.

TCU and Texas A&M, along with Wright State and Oregon State, will square off in Fort Worth.

Texas will open against Army, and Texas State will face Boston College in the opening round in Austin.

The University of Texas, the top seed in the field, is looking for its seventh national championship.

The Longhorns won it all in 2005, the last time they made it to Omaha. Their 78 College World Series wins are the most among any team in history; their 32 appearances in the tournament are also a record.

Rice, the Conference USA champions, won its only national championship in 2003.

Baylor is the only Texas representative that will be made to cross state lines for regional play, as they head northeast to play Minnesota in Baton Rouge, La.
