Jason Witten became the NFLβs single-season record holder for receptions by a tight end on Sunday, with a five-yard grab in the overtime period. It was Wittenβs sixth of the game and his 103rd on the season, to surpass the mark set by Tony Gonzalez back in 2004.
Witten admitted afterward that under the circumstances--namely, the loss--made his accomplishment a little bittersweet.
βBeen here 10 years, you would rather it come in a different way and when you can go out and have a win and enjoy it,β said Witten, per the Dallas Morning News. βItβs just something thatβs special. Obviously, there have been a lot of good tight ends play for a long time and I have so much respect for the game and this position.β
Witten has said several times that the accomplishment was made all the more special because of the way he struggled through the first three or so games of the year, as he dealt with the lingering effects of a lacerated spleen.
βTo break that,β Witten said, βitβs special probably more so this year because of the way the season started for me and itβs something Iβm going to remember for a long time.β
