Spears Sprains MCL, Out 4-6 Weeks

Another spot of rotten luck for the Cowboys this training camp: defensive end Marcus Spears has a sprained MCL in his knee and may not be available for the season opener against Washington. Todd Archer at the Dallas Morning News reports Spears will likely miss 4-6 weeks:

Marcus Spears' availability for the Sept. 12 season opener at Washington is in question because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Spears suffered a Grade 2 tear of the ligament but he will not require surgery. The injury just requires time to heal and he will likely have to wear a brace when he returns.

Jason Hatcher would appear to be the new starter at defensive end but he has been slowed in training camp because of a hyperextended elbow.

Is it a coincidence that this injury comes a mere day after Jerry Jones went spouting off about how this is the best Dallas team since the Super Bowl years? You say yes. I say the Double J just haaaaaad to go running his mouth with a barely a week of training camp behind him. THIS IS HIS FAULT! Stupid Jerry. Everyone knows the second you hype up a team like this one, everything goes into the gutter.

Spears’ injury is the second nasty injury to befall the Cowboys this preseason. Dez Bryant will also miss the customary 4-6 weeks thanks to a high ankle sprain. That injury prompted the Double J to wonder if the coaches were pushing the players too hard during practice. In the wake of Spears’ injury, expect the team to ban all running and hitting and hold practices in some kind of protective moon bounce, with players wrapped in layers of Charmin. You know, as a precaution.

If you recall, the Cowboys had uncommonly good luck last year when it came to injuries. Only eight Cowboys went on IR, and none of them after Week 1. The injuries to Bryant and Spears are an ominous sign that karma may be out to balance itself. Cross your fingers and hope that isn’t the case.
