The New England Patriots’ Wes Welker caught three passes for 103 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s victory over the Cowboys, which sounds like, and kind of is, a huge game. But in terms of what Welker had done over the first five weeks of the season, averaging nine catches for 148 yards and a touchdown per game, Orlando Scandrick, who was charged with covering Welker in his first week back from an ankle injury, deserves some kudos.
It’s not that he shut Welker down, obviously; it’s that Scandrick came closer than anyone this year to slowing the record-setting pace of production seen out of the Texas Tech product.
“I knew it was going to be a challenge,” Scandrick said of Welker, per ESPN Dallas. “He’s not one of those guys where you watch film and know what he runs because all of his routes have second options between him and Tom [Brady]. I felt like I did well. I don’t know what the stats was on him, but I feel like I did well.”
Fortunately for Dallas fans, Scandrick came away from the New England game feeling just fine after missing three games with the high ankle sprain.
“I’m good,” Scandrick said. “I feel great. No pain.”
