Rodriguez Opts for Free Agency

Guilder Rodriguez brought us one of baseball's best moments this season when he made his MLB starting debut at age 31, got a hit in his first at-bat and then had an RBI later in the game that proved to be the game-winner.

And to make it even sweeter, he did it in front of his dad, who flew in that same day from his native Venezuela to be in attendance on the front row by the Rangers dugout. There were lots of people in the stands that night claiming to have something in their eye — put it that way.

He's spent 13 seasons in professional baseball with two different organizations (Milwaukee and Texas) and finally got his shot, and when he did, he made the most of it. Now, he's opting for free agency instead of accepting an outright option to Triple-A Round Rock.

I guess it's hard to fault the guy for wanting a shot somewhere, but the chances of him ever appearing in another MLB game are slim. Either way, it was a great moment and a good distraction from an otherwise awful season in Arlington.
