McFadden “Very Disappointed” to Open Camp on PUP List

Darren McFadden dealt with hamstring issues all offseason

Cowboys running back Darren McFadden is disappointed to find himself on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, but he’d much rather be sidelined now, in late-July, than during the season.

McFadden was placed on the PUP list on Thursday with a hamstring injury--but maybe not the hamstring injury you’re thinking of. The veteran dealt with a nagging hamstring throughout offseason workouts. Then last week, according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News, he hurt the other hamstring while running routes. It’s this last injury, presumably, that has him on the PUP.

It’s one of those things that I hate that it happened right now,” McFadden said, per the Morning News. “But if I’m out there grinding, going 110 percent, trying to get better, it’s something that happened. I’m going to deal with it right now and just be ready to get back on the field when it’s time. I’m very disappointed. But I’d rather it happen now than happen during the season.”

The team believes this is a minor issue.

“We were aware he has a history of soft-tissue injuries. I don’t think this is a major deal,” Cowboys executive vice president and C.O.O. Stephen Jones said. “We’re going to take the right precautions here. You’re trying to put together the best team and one of the things you were worried about with Darren is being hurt and he starts on PUP, you would hope that wouldn’t happen.”
