For a position coach, Hudson Houck was close to celebrity status at one point in his career.
That was thanks to Emmitt Smith, who ended his career as the NFL's leading all-time rusher.
Now Houck, who has been coaching offensive lines for 29 years in the NFL, has decided to retire.
It's not odd that a 29-year coaching veteran would decide to retire, but the fact that the Cowboys immediately announced the hiring of New York Jets offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who turned down an offer to return to the Jets, raises some question.
Callahan, who is probably most remembered by college football fans as a failed head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and to a lesser extent (in these parts, anyway) as a failed head coach for the Oakland Raiders, has a pristine reputation as an assistant coach.
Callahan leaves the Jets after joining them in 2008 as a mass exodus seems poised to happen after numerous players have come out and called out everyone under the sun, including "lazy" quarterback Mark Sanchez.
The young Cowboys offensive line, especially 20-year-old phenom tackle Tyron Smith, should benefit greatly from Callahan's instruction, as should the Cowboys new emerging featured running back DeMarco Murray.
