After spending time booking big Coldplay concerts and rodeos and all things not football to be at his fortress in Arlington, Jerry Jones made the annual appearance at the Senior Bowl in Mobile on Wednesday and, at least temporarily, wore his general manager of the Cowboys hat.
Jones, the only GM in football who isn't a GM all the time, came out and made it known that the Cowboys don't have to draft a quarterback this year even though they've been heavily tied to taking North Dakota State's Carson Wentz to be an heir apparent to Romo, who's on the final stretch of his career.
It's easy to see why Jones feels that way — the Cowboys have a very finite window with Romo and even with Jerry being on this Earth — but is it the best approach for the future of the team? Jones isn't concerned with that.
"There are many options," Jones told NFL.com. "There's free agency. ... We have to (draft a QB) to do what? We have to win a Super Bowl next year? Do we have to compete for a Super Bowl in the future? Do you have to have it in place after this draft? There's no have-to here, in my mind, because we have the luxury of having Romo here for three, four or five more years."
Is it the best idea? Probably not. But what Jerry says goes around Valley Ranch, so if Jerry says the Cowboys don't need to draft a quarterback this year, don't count on it.
