Garrett Confirms Cassel Will Start Against the Jets

Many have called for the team to give backup Kellen Moore a look

To the surprise of no one, on Monday, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett confirmed that the team will stick with Matt Cassel under center on Saturday when the New York Jets come to town.

Matt Cassel will be our starting quarterback this week, yes,” Garrett told the team’s official website.

Cassel looked bad in the 28-7 loss to the Packers on Sunday, completing under 45 percent of his passes. He finished with just 114 yards passing, no touchdowns and an interception. He now has one more interception on the season than he does touchdown passes, and many—including Jimmy Johnson—believe the Cowboys have nothing to lose by seeing what Kellen Moore can do at this point.

But almost immediately after the loss, both Garrett and Jerry Jones offered up votes of confidence in Cassel.

Making today’s announcement altogether unsurprising.

“I think the evaluation is who gives us the best chance to win on Saturday night,” Garrett said. “We still feel like Matt Cassel is that guy. He’s done some good things for our team over time that he’s started for us this year.”
