Detwiler Hoping For, Needing Better Outing

Ross Detwiler's deepest, darkest nightmares couldn't have cooked up a worse scenario for his Rangers' starting debut last week in Oakland.

After begging and pleading for a shot at being a starting pitcher again after spending last year in Washington as a reliever, Detwiler is getting his shot with the Rangers and the first try went horribly. The lefty allowed five earned runs (eight total) in less than five innings of work while giving up 10 hits. That was all after the fact that he breezed through the first two innings fairly easily before his wheels were shot off in the third.

Yovani Gallardo struggled mightily in his Rangers debut last week — though not as badly as Detwiler — and then rebounded for a nice start on Saturday night in his home debut. Now, Detwiler needs to follow suit or soon enough he could find himself back in the bullpen with young starter Chi Chi Gonzalez banging on the door to the bigs and the Rangers' hand being pushed after Derek Holland's injury.
