Cowboys VP on Ware, Austin: “You Have to Look at it”

The Cowboys are weighing the pros and cons of cutting ties with a pair of big-name veterans

With the NFL’s free agency period looming, the Dallas Cowboys are weighing their options. According to estimates, the team will be about $25 million over the salary cap to start off, and they could make up almost all of that by cutting ties with healthily-paid veterans DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin.

Austin being released, more than Ware, seems like a forgone conclusion at this point. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones says the team hasn’t made any decisions yet in either case, but for whatever it’s worth, he used the past tense when discussing Ware.

We’re still gathering all of our information and getting the lay of the land,” Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News. “Obviously, DeMarcus had a hell of a career, but when we’re in the cap situation that we’re in and obviously counting as much as he is obviously you have to look at it along with several others.”

Jones had similar comments on Austin.

“Great career and he has a big cap number and we have to take a look at it,” Jones said.
