Newy Made Famous as β€œThe Weed Guy”

Newy Scruggs' celebrity status is quickly growing beyond Dallas-Fort Worth due to a viral video published by NBCDFW.com on Wednesday.

In the clip, Scruggs is outside of AT&T Park in San Francisco reporting on the World Series when he mentions that he smells weed in the air near the popular McCovey Cove hangout.

"This is San Francisco, and I can tell you, right over there -- there's some people smoking weed -- because it's coming this way," Scruggs said in the report. "I'm standing here and I'm like, 'That's not cigarettes! That's weed, That's weed!'"

On Thursday, the clip was picked up by national sites like Yahoo! Sports, HuffingtonPost.com and Gawker, garnering hundreds of thousands of views by people far outside of the DFW and Bay Area.

As the popularity continued to grow, hundreds of Giants fans in the Bay area approached Scruggs asking to take their picture with "the weed guy."

NBC Bay Area reported that on Thursday, there was a stronger police presence in McCovey Cove and that Scruggs' video may be partially responsible for that. They also expressed concern that Scruggs' video would give the impression that all San Franciscans ... San Franciscoans? ... anyhow -- they were worried that the world might think everyone in the Bay Area was high all the time.  Which, probably isn't the case.

Finally, late Thursday, the clip was picked up by NBC Late Night host Jimmy Fallon and used in his Remix the Clips segment. (Watch it here or below)
