Cats Dominate Canaries

Lee Gwaltney worked eight scoreless innings and Michael Bell hit a three-run homer as the Cats defeated Sioux Falls 8-1 on Monday afternoon.

The Cats broke a scoreless tie in the third inning as Michael Bell singled with one out. The next batter, Charles Carter doubled into the left field corner, scoring Bell for a 1-0 Cats' lead.

With two outs in the fourth inning, the Cats added three runs to their lead as Michael Bell hit a three-run home run for a 4-0 Cats' advantage. It was Bell's fourth homer of the year and his third in the last four games.

Fort Worth made it 7-0 in the fifth on a Ryan Patterson run-scoring single and a two-run single by Kelley Gulledge. Gulledge added an RBI double in the ninth to make it 8-0 Cats as he finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

The Canaries got their lone run on a solo homer in the ninth by Trevor Lawhorn.

Gwaltney, who was named the American Association's Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, allowed no runs on only two hits in eight innings of work. He struck out two and walked three for his third win of the season.

Sioux Falls starter Travis Kane allowed seven runs on eight hits in five innings of work to take the loss.

The win improved the Cats record to 9-2 on the season as they have won three of the first four games on their current six-game road trip.

The two teams continue the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Cats will have Jae Jung on the mound looking for his first win of the season.
