The U.S. economy added 142,000 jobs in August— fewer than expected — and the unemployment rate dropped to 6.1 percent from 6.2 percent in July, according to the Labor Department. Economists predicted that the government's report will show that employers added 220,000 jobs in August. The lower-than-expected non-farm payrolls number broke the six-month streak of job growth above 200,000.
