An ex-high school teacher in West Texas faces up to 170 years in prison for having sexual contact with two female students.
The Odessa American reports the penalty phase continues Tuesday for 45-year-old Jay Dee Burns.
The former Odessa Permian High School instructor pleaded guilty Monday to nine charges -- four counts of an improper relationship between an educator and a student, three counts of sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child and stalking.
The latest news from around North Texas.
Burns was a social studies teacher and academic decathlon coach.
Odessa police began investigating Burns in March 2015 when an 18-year-old was treated for an overdose and she mentioned the teacher. A 16-year-old girl also reported having sexual contact with Burns. The girls knew each other.
Burns resigned last June.
