Fort Worth Fire Department crews were called before 6 p.m. to the 3400 block of High River Road, where they said the two people had been riding a pair of ATVs when they went into the river and became stranded.

The men were apparently attempting to cross at what is normally a shallow crossing but were swept downstream by the river that is still swollen from overnight rains.

One of the men had a cell phone and managed to call 911 from the middle of the river.

Officials said the men could not swim, so the rescue involved sending a firefighter out to them, one at a time, with a life jacket and a rope to help guide the men safely to shore.

โ€œCircumstances came together well for them today. Thankfully, they were able to call 911 from a cell that was still working after taking a swim in the river,โ€ said Kyle Faulkner, spokesperson for the Fort Worth Fire Department.

MedStar crews checked the men at the scene and said they were not injured.

Police said it is the menโ€™s responsibility to remove the all-terrain vehicles from the river.
