Waco Privately Run Jail Inmate's Death Under Investigation

Federal, state and Waco-area authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the privately operated Jack Harwell Detention Center in McLennan County.

Sheriff's Office Capt. Ricky Armstrong told the Waco Tribune-Herald only that the inmate was a U.S. Marshals Service prisoner.

Brandon Wood, executive director of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, says the detention center notified the commission of the death Monday evening. Regulations require county jails and private detention centers to notify the commission within 24 hours of an inmate's death.

The jail is operated by an affiliate of Louisiana-based LaSalle Corrections.  In February, three former LaSalle employees were indicted in Waco on charges they altered documents to make it look like they did scheduled inmate checks following a suicide in the jail last year.
