Texas Mom Guilty, Provided Drugs, Alcohol in Prom Date Death

A Texas mother who provided drugs and liquor to her underage son and his prom date must serve 21 months in prison for her role in the girl's death.

Melissa Ann Martinez was sentenced after pleading guilty Tuesday in Houston, in a plea deal, to providing drugs and alcohol to the teens.

Her now-20-year-old son, Eddie M. Herrera, was convicted last week of aggravated assault in the 2014 death of 17-year-old Jacqueline Gomez. She was found unresponsive in a Houston hotel room that the couple shared following the prom.

Herrera was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Herrera choked Gomez during sex. The defense said the death was an accidental overdose. A medical examiner said the cause of death was undetermined.

The Texas legal drinking age is 21.
