Vendors Prepare for Opening of State Fair of Texas

The night sky lights up with celebration over Fair Park, as the State Fair of Texas is just hours from opening Friday morning.

Vendors put their final touches down before thousands flock to the park for opening day. The excitement and joy will last for nearly a month of the Texas tradition.

โ€œThe Texas State Fair is the biggest fair in America,โ€ vendor Tim Solem said.

Solem, Jesse Vudragovich and John Nagel are just some of the hundreds of people working the fair. Itโ€™s a job that puts them on the road for most of the year and away from their families.

โ€œI haven't been home since June,โ€ Solem said.

โ€œYou meet a lot of great people," Vudragovich said. "Long hours, but itโ€™s an experience."

Itโ€™s an experience where you are bound to find something new, like vegetarian corn dogs this year. Itโ€™s a new venture the Texas-based Fletcher's decided to sell this year at the fair.

โ€œWe've done turkey dog for those who don't eat pork or beef,โ€ said Esther McGough, who is a vendor with Fletcherโ€™s. โ€œAnd now we're doing vegan for those who don't eat turkey or beef.โ€

They are certainly not your typical fair foods to accompany the variety of rides, Big Tex, games and plenty of other foods that help make up the State Fair of Texas.

The fair opens at 10 a.m. and runs through Oct. 18.
