Spay Neuter Network Targeting Neighborhoods To Stop Roaming Dogs

A North Texas non-profit group is taking on the problem of loose dogs in Dallas with surgeries and speeches.

On a warm, sunny day, a nightclub parking lot in Southeast Dallas fills up fast with pet lovers and their furry family members.

Inside the "Hope Mobile" veterinarians perform free spay neuter surgeries, sterilizing dozens of dogs and cats.

"If you were to do a scan of all the veterinary clinics in this area," said Spay Nueter Executive Director Deanna Sauceda. "You might find one but it wouldn't be affordable."

On this day, the Spay Neuter Network provided free surgeries or rabies shots for pets in the 75211, 75217 and 75227 zip codes.. areas with the most complaints about loose animals.

"We want to reduce the number of animals that are running loose," said Sauceda.  "We want to reduce the animal over population problem. Bringing these services right into neighborhoods makes all the difference in the world because people will literally walk down to see us."

While animals recover in the van, Magnolia Martinez walks though nearby neighborhoods.

"We are not waiting for people to us. We are going to their doors. And telling them 'hey this is the opportunity that we're offering you today."

The Spay Neuter Network members know educating pet owners and fixing animals isn't the only way to stop roaming dogs in Dallas but its a start.

"Everybody who lives in in any community throughout Dallas wants to do the right thing for their pets," said Sauceda.

"Collaboration, finding smart solutions and working together. That's how we're going to solve the problem.

Each surgery costs $100 per animal. If you'd like to donate to The Spay Neuter Network, click on this sentence.
