A sport utility vehicle slammed into the rear of a Tarrant County jail van Tuesday, sending 13 people to hospitals, four of them with serious injuries.
The crash happened just before 1:30 p.m. on the northbound North Freeway service road along Interstate 35W near Meacham Boulevard.
Fort Worth Police spokesman Sgt. Steven Enright said a chain-reaction collision pushed the SUV into the rear of the Tarrant County jail van that was carrying 10 inmates and a driver.
The sheriff's office told NBC 5 the van was on its way back to the Tarrant County Jail, Greenbay facility, when the crash happened.
MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky said both SUV occupants, the van driver and one of the inmates were the most severely injured, although none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Those four were transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital for treatment, while the remaining nine inmates were transported to John Peter Smith Hospital for examinations.
Two additional people involved in the crash were treated at the scene and not transported to a hospital.
