Neighbors Help Woman, Disabled Mother Escape Fire

Two neighbors helped a homeowner and her mother escape a house fire that left three Dallas firefighters injured in Oak Cliff overnight Monday.

The fire started in the 1500 block of Drury Drive at about 10:26 p.m. Monday. The homeowner said the fire started in the garage and then thick smoke and flames filled her house within minutes.

The homeowner said her mother is disabled and they were having trouble escaping the house. Neighbor Luis Robles said he heard their screams, so he and his son-in-law rushed to help.

"We just followed the smoke," Robles said. "They were standing there in the house, but she can't walk. It just happened so quick."

The family was not hurt, but all of their possessions were destroyed in the fire.

Two firefighters suffered minor burns resulting from a gas explosion, officials said.. A third firefighter was also suffered minor injuries. All three were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and later released.

Investigators said the fire was likely caused by one of the residents failing to extinguish a cigarette in the garage.
