Grand Jury Declines to Indict DA in Death of Crossing Guard

A grand jury in Northeast Texas has decided not to indict a district attorney in the death of an 87-year-old school crossing guard who was struck earlier this year by a vehicle driven by the prosecutor.

A charge of criminally negligent homicide was dropped against Hunt County District Attorney Noble Walker after the jury declined to indict him Thursday.

The Greenville Herald-Banner reports that the special prosecutor in the case, Kenda Culpepper, issued a statement saying the jury and multiple law enforcement agencies agreed that the death "was an accident and not criminal in nature."

Christine Jewell Sandlin was in a crosswalk near an elementary school when she was struck in March. She died at a Dallas hospital two weeks later.

An accident report noted conditions were dark and rainy.
