There are concerns about race relations in Fort Worth after the city brought in the National League of Cities to study how the city deals with the community.
The NLC’s Racial Equity and Leadership team was tasked with interview city and community leaders and assessing race relations. Mayor Betsy Price said the city is now making plans in reaction to the assessment.
“We are getting ready to appoint a team of city leaders of all races and all types of people to head this up,” she said. “We will be working to heal some of the divides and look at the issues NLC raised and find actual ideas on how to move forward.”
City leaders said the finding were released as an internal document.
“Fort Worth is a very compassionate city. We are founded on fairness and equity and we take it very serious,” Price said. “Any issue that comes up or gets raised around race relations or inequality, we’re going to take a hard look at it and try to come up with fair and equitable solutions.”
While Price did not go into detail, she said the report raised issues.
“One of the first things we are doing obviously is looking at education opportunities and the inequity of education,” Price said. “It’s very troubling when you start looking at the data coming out of our schools. Out of our minority schools.”
