Community Mourns Slain Richardson Officer Who Was Larger Than Life

RICHARDSON — Hundreds gathered Sunday night for a candlelight vigil to remember a hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice.Patrol officer and SWAT team member David Sherrard, 37, was fatally shot Wednesday night while responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex. He was the first Richardson police officer killed in the line of duty."Our community's hearts are aching," Richardson Mayor Paul Voelker told the crowd gathered outside the Richardson Civic Center. "We also mourn the loss of a Richardson citizen, Rene Gamez, who tried to help a troubled soul and in doing so, lost his own life."Despite terrible losses, our community is defined by an unbreakable spirit," he said.
