Utility Crews Spark Gas Line Fire in Arlington

Water utility crews in Arlington were working to repair a water line leak Sunday afternoon when they hit a gas line which then caught fire.

This happened at the intersection of East Abram Street and Ditto Avenue. That's just east of Collins Street and about a mile south of AT&T Stadium.

Investigators said when crews hit the gas line, they immediately stopped working, and contacted Atmos Energy.

As crews were pumping excess water out of the hole so repairs could be made to the gas line, the gas ignited.

One Arlington water utilities worker and two Arlington firefighters were injured and have been taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas for treatment. The utility worker and one firefighter suffered first degree burns and have been released from the hospital. The second firefighter had first degree burns and some spots with second degree burns. He will remain in the hospital overnight.

The Arlington Fire Department said the fire was extinguished just before 10 p.m. Electricity has been cut off to some homes in the area. Oncor cut power to the lines during the fire for safety.
