Mother and Baby Hurt When Car Slams Into South Dallas House

Police say driver fled from the scene after the crash

At least two people were injured when an SUV crashed into a home in South Dallas, and police say the driver ran from the scene.

Emergency crews were called to the 1300 block of Peabody Avenue just before noon.

According to family members, a mother and three children were inside the home when the vehicle came crashing through a wall. The woman and a 1-year-old child were injured, they said.

Homeowner Debbie Ferguson Thomas said she was away from the house at the time, making funeral arrangements for her mother, who died Christmas Day.

Thomas' daughter and grandson stayed behind and were the two injured.

"I left the funeral home and rushed to the house and got here, and I was looking for the vehicle that hit my house," Thomas said. "An officer grabbed me by the arm and said, 'Brace yourself, the vehicle is inside your house.'"

Two other children, ages 6 and 12, had gone into another room to get a computer just before the crash. They weren't injured.

The driver, who has not been identified, fled from the location after the crash, according to police, but was arrested a short time later.

She faces a charge of failure to stop and render aid.
