A North Texas city will pay $1.25 million to relatives of an inmate who died after struggling with jailers.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Arlington City Council on Tuesday night approved the mediated settlement with the family of Jonathan Ryan Paul.
Arlington police arrested Paul during a March 9, 2015, disturbance. An autopsy report says Paul became disruptive and on March 10 jailers used physical restraints and pepper spray on him. Paul collapsed in jail and was taken to a hospital. He died March 13.
A medical examiner said the restraints, pepper spray and Paul's acute psychosis contributed to his death.
Two now-former jailers await trial on criminally negligent homicide charges in Paul's death. One jailer retired last fall. The other was fired.
Two other jailers were also fired.
