American Airlines Flight Returns to Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Over Maintenance Issue

Passenger on AA flight reports smoke in cabin before flight returned to D/FW

An American Airlines flight returned to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Wednesday after a mechanical issue apparently caused smoke to enter the cabin.

AA Flight 96 to St. Louis departed D/FW at 12:46 p.m. and returned about an hour later, landing at 1:43 p.m. without issue.

"The flight returned to DFW due to a mechanical issue. The aircraft landed safely, and is taxing to the gate," the airline said in a news release.

No injuries were reported and passengers were expected to be booked on other flights.

Twitter user Charlie Jackson posted a tweet with a photo showing what appeared to be a hazy cabin and that his flight was returning to D/FW with smoke filling the cabin.

Jackson told NBC 5 he was on Flight 96 and that his departure was delayed twice Wednesday morning before the incident after take off. Jackson said the first delay was due to an electrical issue and a second delay was due to a problem with the landing gear.

The flight eventually departed about four hours after it's scheduled departure time only to return to the airport after smoke was reported in the cabin.

NBC 5 is awaiting additional comment from the airline.
