Texas Mother Convicted of Charge in Daughter's Hot-Car Death

An El Paso high school teacher has been convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the death of her 5-month-old daughter in a hot car.

An El Paso County jury returned its verdict Friday on 39-year-old Wakesha Ives in the May 2013 death of her daughter, Janay Aliah Ives, who was found unconscious in her mother's car outside Riverside High School.

Trial witnesses testified that Janay had been left alone in the car for more than eight hours.

Ives' attorney has asked state District Judge Patrick Garcia to assess punishment Oct. 8. Ives, who remains free on bond, could be sentenced to six months to two years in jail or probation.
