Pound Euthanizes Dogs Prematurely

A Houston-area dog pound is calling it "a mistake" that it euthanized two dogs hours after they were brought in and as someone was signing papers to rescue them.

Rene Vasquez, assistant director of the Fort Bend County Animal Shelter, told the Houston Chronicle that the dogs should have been kept for three working days before a decision was made to put them down.

Short Mugs Rescue President Courtney Pearce told the newspaper that a volunteer from the rescue group was at the pound to rescue the French bulldog and an American pit-bull mix when both were euthanized.

Vasquez said neither dog had tags or microchips to identify them. Nevertheless, he said the shelter's protocol wasn't followed and staff responsible for the mistake will be disciplined.
