Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Surveys Storm Damage Left By Hurricane Harvey

Abbott given an American Flag found among storm debris, asked to return it to the Rockport mayor

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott visited the Coastal Bend region Monday, touring the area and speaking with homeowners devastated by Hurricane Harvey.

According to a statement from the governor's office, Abbott was "inspired by the resilience and bravery of the communities in that region, and he reaffirmed Texas' commitment to doing everything possible to help people rebuild and recover."

"A Texas-sized storm requires a Texas-sized response, and that is exactly what the state will provide," said Abbott. "While we have suffered a great deal, the resiliency and bravery of Texan's spirits is something that can never be broken. As communities are comeing together in the aftermath of this storm, I will do everything in my power to make sure they have what they need to rebuild."

Earlier in the day the governor mobilized the remainder of the Texas National Guard in response to Hurricane Harvey, bringing the total number of deployed guardsman to about 12,000.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn joined Abbott on the ground to see firsthand the aftermath and to help facilitate coordination of the federal, state, and local response to the recovery effort in Texas.

The governor's office said while touring Rockport Abbott was approached by a local veteran who recovered the American Flag that was flying at Rockport City Hall. She asked the Governor to deliver the flag to Rockport Mayor C.J. Wax, which he did.
