Dallas Considers County-Owned Tow Lot

Safety plus revenue

Earlier this year, Dallas approved an ordinance that authorized the towing of any vehicles whose owners were found without insurance.

Officers caught 312 drivers without insurance in the first 10 days of the policy. The city already towed uninsured vehicles involved in wrecks. Officers cited 75,000 drivers for no insurance in 2007.

The County of Dallas is starting to recognize that those numbers equal a lot of missed revenue.

Dallas county commissioners are floating the idea of entering into contracts to govern towing by county law enforcement agencies, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Judge Jim Foster has proposed two ideas to handle the mounting tows: creating a county-run impound lot, or offering contracts to a few wrecker companies. Both of the options would generate revenue for the county and provide oversight.

Foster has asked his staff to research into the idea and bring the results before the next Commissioner's Court meeting on Aug. 4.
