Child, 3, found to have extensive bruising and a skull fracture

A South Texas couple accused of repeatedly beating their 3-year-old daughter and tying her up with a rope have been arrested.

Twenty-year-old Maria A. Zuniga and 23-year-old Jose Luis Reyes have been charged with serious bodily injury to a child, a first-degree felony. Both remained in jail Tuesday on bonds of $100,000 each.

A jail official did not have attorney information for them.

The Hidalgo County sheriff's office says they were contacted Friday by staff at McAllen Medical Center after a 3-year-old patient was discovered to have extensive bruising and a skull fracture.

The parents live near Weslaco.

The McAllen Monitor reports that If convicted, they could face up to life in prison and a fine up to $10,000.
