Arlington police said they arrested a man Friday in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left a 71-year-old man dead Wednesday night. [[354847871,C]]
Nghi Pham was walking home from church when he was struck crossing South Collins Street near Mayfield Road at about 9:30 p.m., according to police. Pham was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.
In an arrest warrant affidavit released Friday afternoon, police said Kennedy Pham, no relation to the victim, went to the police station at about 3:30 p.m. Thanksgiving Day and said he thought he hit something the night before in his Toyota Tundra. He said he stopped briefly to see what it was, didn't see anything and left.
When he arrived at home Wednesday night, he told police he noticed damage to his vehicle and had trouble opening his front door.
Kennedy Pham told police he learned of the hit-and-run Thanksgiving Day, felt guilty and drove to the Arlington Police Department headquarters on Division Street.
Following an interview with detectives, Kennedy Pham was booked him into jail on a charge of accident involving death at 1:43 a.m. Friday. The arrest warrant affidavit lists a charge of felony Failure to Stop and Render Aid. He is free after posting bond.
Investigators seized Kennedy Pham's truck and found damage consistent with a pedestrian-involved crash, police said. They also were able to match broken pieces of a headlight to Kennedy Pham's vehicle.
Nghi Pham's family said he had been volunteering at a nearby Vietnamese church before the crash. He moved to the United States at the end of the Vietnam War and was a father of six and a grandfather.
At this time, it is not known if the church Nghi Pham attended is the same attended by Kennedy Pham.
