Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage said one container of its fresh-ground peanut butter tested positive for salmonella.
Executive vice president and co-owner Heather Isely said the container was in the home of a Colorado resident who become ill from salmonella. Isely said that because the container has been opened, it would be difficult to determine the source of the contamination.
Vitamin Cottage voluntarily recalled its packed fresh-ground peanut butter Feb. 2 as a precaution because the peanuts came from the Peanut Corp. of America.
The Colorado grocery chain has locations in Texas, including one in Dallas, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.
Isely said no cases have been linked to Vitamin Cottage stores outside of Colorado.
Isely said labels from the peanuts that Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage used indicated they came from the Texas plant.
None of the unopened tubs of peanut butter taken from Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage has tested positive so far. The company is still awaiting results of tests on other containers.
Food and Drug Administration testing found no trace of salmonella on any peanut-grinding machines being used in the company's stores.
A nationwide salmonella outbreak has been traced to a Peanut Corp. of America plant in Blakely, Ga. Preliminary tests at its plant in Plainview, Texas, showed possible salmonella contamination.
The plants have closed, and Peanut Corp. of America has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
Officials from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment didn't immediately return a call to The Associated Press.
