New In-Patient Center Tackles Women's Mental Health Issues

There's a new place for women to go for mental health services and it's the first of its kind in Texas.

Studies show that women best respond to treatment when they're surrounded by other women, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Allen is offering in-patient treatment center for women-only.

Liza ter Kuile has battled post-partum depression four times, after each of her babies.

"Being a new mom is one of the hardest things you ever do," said ter Kuile. "You were embarrassed by it because I felt like if I was a better mom I could get through this so I kept it quiet."

Eventually she learned that, by not keeping quiet, she'd be able to get the help she needed.

What makes the state's first women-only Behavioral Health Program different is that it features a 12-bed in-patient wing.

"That's really an important step," said Debora Iverson, Director of the Behavior Health Program. "Because there are studies that show, when separated by gender for both mental health and substance abuse, that women have better outcomes when they're treated on a gender specific unit."

"I think just making it acceptable to ask for help is huge," said ter Kuile who offers encouragement in the fitness classes she teaches to new moms.

And now, help is around the corner.

"With this, I just feel like there's going to be a level of compassion, and the moms don't have anything to prove," said ter Kuile. "They're there, they know people are there to help people, and I just think it's going to take some of the guilt off the plate."

The clinic has only been open a few weeks and has already treated moms with post-partum depression.

Doctors not only tackle post-partum depression but also anxiety disorders and substance abuse.
