Friends of the Katy Trail Complete Phase One

Friends of the Katy Trail held an event yesterday in the Snyder Union Plaza celebrating the completion of Phase One of their Master Plan to create a “12 foot wide, 3.5 mile concrete trail with a parallel 8 foot wide, 3.1 mile soft-surface trail.” The group aims to eventually extend the pathway into a 17 mile “central expressway” with grand entrances, additional stairs and landscaping throughout. Mayor Tom Lepport stressed the importance of making the trail safer with the additions of cautionary yield signs, especially after last month’s tragic accident where a young woman was killed after colliding with a bicycle. On a cheerier note, Lepport also chatted about plans to make the trail more useful for everyday transportation.
